See, what most folks think of as grenadine — what’s sold in grocery and liquor stores as grenadine, with “grenadine” right there on the label — isn’t grenadine at all. It’s colored corn syrup. In cocktails, it adds color and some sweetness, but nothing else. True grenadine, on the other hand? It’s made from pomegranates — the name is actually derived from the French word for pomegranate — and it brings a lot more to the table, or glass, than a little color and sugar. It’s bright, sweet, tart, fruity, juicy, and a touch floral.
